Goal
Direct Line aimed to construct and bring online a new 24 MW data center, encompassing extensive infrastructure including ladder racks, basket trays, fiber trunks, copper cabling, network and server cabinets, and a range of advanced network, management, and server equipment.
Scope of Work
The scope of the project included:
- Installing over 5 miles of ladder rack and basket tray
- Deploying of over 16 miles of fiber trunks
- Laying down 180 miles of Category 6 copper cabling
- Connecting 100,000+ SM fiber cables
- Setting up 1,600+ network and server cabinets
- Receiving, installing, and bringing online all customer network, management, and server equipment
- Implementing an electronic security and RFID equipment tracking system across a 3-campus, 27-suite environment in conjunction with the 24 MW suite build.
Challenges
The project presented several key challenges:
- Innovation and Uncertainty: Direct Line was tasked with testing and deploying new, unproved fiber connectivity solutions and machine learning technologies alongside the customer.
- Security Integration: Implementing an advanced electronic security and RFID equipment tracking system across a large, multi-campus environment with added layers of complexity.
- Coordination and Collaboration: The project required seamless collaboration with designers, manufacturers, engineers, suppliers, and the customer to ensure cost-effective and timely solutions, all while adhering to safety guidelines and strict completion timelines.
Results
Despite numerous challenges, Direct Line successfully delivered the project within the 24-month timeline. Key achievements included:
