A Day in the Life of Mario Berrios

What is your current role?
I’m a Technical Trainer for DCP (Data Center Practice).

How long have you been with Direct Line?
I have been with Direct Line since 2018, making it six years.

What kind of education and training did your career require?

My career required significant education and training, including technical skills like Tier 1 and 2 testing, cabling techniques, and certifications such as CompTIA A+. I also needed a strong understanding of industry standards (BICSI), network infrastructure, and topology. Becoming proficient in Microsoft Office tools and project management was essential to my role, along with receiving soft skills training for effective communication and customer service. This comprehensive training equipped me to meet the demands of my profession effectively.

What do you think is needed to be successful in your role?

Success in my role requires thorough preparation, strong organizational skills, and self-motivation. Attention to detail and a deep understanding of infrastructure and network systems are essential. Additionally, it is crucial to know our customers and support our technicians by understanding what they require to succeed in an ever-evolving industry.

What does a typical day look like for you at Direct Line?
A typical day for me at Direct Line starts with checking emails and messages to prepare for meetings. If I’m conducting training, I ensure I’m well-prepared by creating a participant list, preparing an outline, and gathering the necessary tools and materials. When traveling to a different state for training, I make sure all logistics are in place, including access permissions and points of contact.

For anyone interested in applying to Direct Line, I highly recommend it. The company offers numerous opportunities for growth and development. Be a sponge; many professionals here truly know what they are doing. This mindset will help you thrive and succeed in your career at Direct Line.

Tell us about your career path at Direct Line.

I initially joined Direct Line through an agency and was impressed by what I saw, which made me eager to become a permanent part of the company. After completing the project, I was working at another data center when I learned that Direct Line was hiring. Despite having to take a pay cut, I applied and was hired as an entry-level technician. Since then, I have progressed through various roles, including technician, lead, and foreman, and I am now proud to serve as a technical trainer, working with the great team at Direct Line University.

What inspired you to pursue a career in technology?
What inspired me to pursue a career in technology was my fascination with networks and how they operate. I have a genuine love for technology, and the opportunity to be actively involved in this field is truly exhilarating.

What do you love most about what you do?
What I love most about my work is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. Being able to train individuals within the company and witnessing the positive changes it brings, both professionally and personally, is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I am helping others excel in their roles and grow as individuals is what truly fulfills me.

What are your interests outside of work?

Outside of work, my primary focus is ensuring the well-being of my family and two dogs, Sparky, and Milo. I have a strong passion for sports, particularly supporting my hometown soccer team, Wilsterman, and being a big fan of Real Madrid, Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins, New York Yankees, and Boca Juniors. Additionally, I enjoy satisfying my curiosity by always seeking new learning adventures through courses and classes. I love to learn new things.

Tell us a surprising or fun fact about you.

A surprising fact about me is that I was deeply involved in sports growing up. I played soccer, basketball, baseball, football, and volleyball. I was even on track to become a professional soccer player. Additionally, I have always had a passion for aviation and dreamt of becoming a pilot due to my love for planes.

On a different note, I spent over 10 years as a bartender, aspiring to become a skilled mixologist. I dedicated my free time to studying mixology, devouring mixology books, and watching countless videos to foster my passion. It’s worth noting that I have a strong work ethic and consider myself a workaholic, driven by my determination to excel in all my endeavors.
